Here are some key considerations when thinking about choosing medical cover:

  • Be certain that you have been adequately insured against the costs of major medical emergencies before thinking of the minor ones.
  • Ensure that your medical aid covers hospitalisation, chronic medication (if required) and costly out of hospital procedures such as MRI and CAT scans.
  • Whether you are funding your own medical aid, or are part of a company medical aid scheme, make sure that you know exactly what cover you have in place.
  • Don’t forget that penalties may be levied by medical insurance companies if you have not been a member of a medical aid for a period of time. The earlier you join the better!
